Buttercream
Buttercream is purely a mixture of butter and icing sugar. You may have used it to fill your own homemade sponge cakes or to top your cupcakes, however it takes some skill to cover a whole cake in buttercream. Many of the beautiful white buttercream cakes you see on Pinterest are in fact American, and American frosting is actually made with lard! In the UK buttercream is made with butter, so our cakes will always have a slight yellow tinge to them. We do have some tricks up our sleeve to lighten the buttercream but it will never be pure white.

Delicious chocolate buttercream drip cake!
Buttercream cakes do give a more 'rustic' feel as you can never get a clean finish to them. You also have to consider the heat when ordering a buttercream cake and planning your party as your cake will have to be stored and displayed out of direct sunlight and preferably placed somewhere cool.

Three tier semi-naked buttercream wedding cake!
Fondant
Fondant icing, or rolled/sugarpaste icing is the traditional method when covering a cake in the UK. The icing can be coloured, and this is easier to do apposed to the buttercream which has a yellow undertone. Fondant gives a much smoother finish and you can round or sharpen the edges. We believe choosing fondant iced cakes opens up more decorating options. You can model the fondant, emboss and even hand-paint the fondant so the cake is more bespoke and unique to you.
